The United States is entering a new era, in which it is no longer the
world’s unrivalled superpower. This is posing unfamiliar challenges for the US at a time when Washington is already paralysed by its partisan divides. Can the US maintain its traditional dominance of Asia? If so, how? And what will this mean for allies like Australia? In this US election year, leading thinkers consider the options facing Australia’s closest ally and how Canberra should respond.

Professor Brendan Taylor, Strategic Studies, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University
Ms Felicity Ruby, Department of Government and
International Relations, USYD
Professor Bruce W. Jentleson, Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke University

Presented by Australian Foreign Affairs in partnership with Australian National University.
